Roll up! Roll up! The Mechanical Circus is coming to town! This May, the team at Banbury Museum invite you to go back in time with them and remember those idyllic childhood days of magic and curiosity, where the marvels of the fairground and circus brought imaginations to life.
The latest exhibition to open in the stunning new PYE Gallery, Mechanical Circus runs from 25 May – 7 September, and is a wonderfully nostalgic journey through the good old days of pre-electric entertainment. With lots of magical buttons to press and optical illusions to explore, the exhibition is truly interactive and is perfect for kids aged 1-100!
The perfect way to part kids from their game consoles, the exhibition features a wide range of hands-on activities that will delight all ages. Visitors can put their head in a lion’s mouth, lift the strongman weights or pose at the ‘beach’ – ideal for those family photo memories!
The exhibition includes Banbury Museum’s first international loans and features 20 historic artefacts from the Museum Boerhaave in The Netherlands. With over 40 automata exhibits and 10 interactive games, all displayed in an immersive carnival atmosphere, the exhibition promises a truly memorable experience for all the family. Tickets cost £5 for adults, £4 concessions, £3 for children and family tickets are £15.
The exhibition opens at the start of the May half term holiday with a family launch day on Saturday 25 May, complete with circus skills training and creative crafts. Families can have a go at juggling, balancing and spinning, in a carnival themed museum! Full details will be on the museum’s website and Facebook page soon.
May half term itself has creative fun for all ages, with the chance for children to make their very own Mechanical Masterpiece. There’s a full day of drop in creativity with Upcycled Art, and the return of the ever-popular Brick Jam. Full details are at www.banburymuseum.org or you can follow the museum’s Facebook page for regular updates.
Alongside the theatrical fun, the museum’s free Banbury Gallery offers a glimpse into 1000 years of Banbury’s history, and explores the heritage of the town. Younger visitors can enjoy the free trail which helps them discover the museum and some of the many innovations which helped Banbury grow into a bustling industrial hub.
Whatever the weather, and whatever your little lovelies like to do, you can be sure there’s something for everyone at Banbury Museum!
