Welcome to the third edition of ‘Your Letterbox Life Coach’ where we share health and wellbeing tips to put the ‘Well’ back into “Cherwell.’
Last month I was writing about ‘Food for Mood’, and as we head into the darker, colder months, with less sunlight, I really think that this is the perfect time to plan how to look after ourselves in the Winter months.
As modern life encourages us to do more, keep fit, have a social life, a career, possibly raise a family- we are prone to overcommit and pay the consequences for our hectic lifestyles. All too often we are at the mercy of common influences which have a negative effect on our health and wellbeing, such as rushing about, working too much, not enough rest, poor food choices, lack of high quality sleep, compromised immune systems, illnesses, straight up stress or emotional trauma such as anxiety or depression.
Through my studies into vegan nutrition, I have become aware of a group of plants that are truly incredible, and may help us to reduce stress levels in our bodies, significantly. They are called adaptogens…they have been around for centuries…. and now we can buy them in almost any supermarket. We are so used to thinking of herbal teas and other plant essences as occasional or emergency ‘therapy’ that we have almost forgotten the nutritional and health benefits they bring as part of a daily diet.
Modern day fad or ancient wisdom?
Both, actually. Although there is a huge buzz around adaptogens, especially in the wellness industry; they have been used in Greek, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The term itself was coined back in the late 1960’s when medical researchers in Russia began exploring the effects of this class of natural products, in an effort to become world leaders in the field.
In short, adaptogens adapt to the bodies particular needs, and may help to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body,
One simple life-hack it to add some adaptogens into your life, whether that be a super-powered adaptogenic hazelnut latte, some cacao bliss balls or a warming soup…. You don’t need any special equipment to make these drinks in your office, so no excuses!
