Celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year, the festival’s roots go back to the mid-1970s when Fairport Convention members Dave Pegg and Dave Swarbrick moved to Cropredy.
Over 3 days experience more than 30 hours of live music, here are some of the festival highlights.
On Thursday the host band Fairport Convention opens the festival with a short acoustic performance and then take the stage again on Saturday to play a 2 hour closing set. On Thursday Gogol Bordello currently on a European Tour are compelling performers combining music, chaos and sorcery in a very vibrant act. The Waterboys headlining always give potent performances. Friday brings Richard Thompson to the stage, a guitar legend, accomplished songwriter and former member of Fairport Convention followed by the headline act of Frank Turner making his Cropredy debut backed by his regular band Sleeping Souls. On Friday Martin Simpson is an award winning performer and a great acoustic guitarist and the festival winds up with a marathon set by Fairport Convention and surprise guests.
Billed as Britain’s friendliest music festival, the resident village population of 720 swells to over 20,000 as music fans of all ages and from all walks of life descend on Cropredy for three days of music in a beautiful rural setting.
In 2007, for the first time in the event’s history, all the tickets were sold before the gates opened. This happened again in 2014 and was repeated in 2017.
Fairport’s Cropredy Convention has developed a reputation as a particularly friendly and safe festival and is aimed at all ages with an emphasis on families. With the site occupying a dozen fields totalling 198 acres, the majority of festival-goers camp for the duration of the event. There are eight camping fields, six of which are adjacent to the main music arena.
The event is renowned for its real ale bar provided by Wadworth, the Devizes brewery which in 1980 at the first festival sold two barrels of beer; today, they sell up to 90,000 pints during the festival. This bar is used by the public and performers alike (there is no back-stage bar) making Cropredy one of the few major events where festival-goers mingle with the musicians.
