“When I thought science was a career option, my science teacher told me to ‘stick to music!’” - a piece of advice that we are glad Beth Thornton took!
At 25, Beth Thornton from Banbury released her debut single Your Everything through W21Records. It reached heights in the country charts of number three earlier this year. Nestled amongst the likes of Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and The Shires. Just another day at the office for Beth!
When I met up with Beth for a coffee, next on her agenda was Country to Country music festival (C2C) at the O2 in London, joining the likes of three times Grammy award winner Brad Paisley. This was going to be Beth’s biggest gig to date. Before that though I was armed with questions from an inspired 4-year old who needed answers.
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: From the age of 13 I always knew that music and singing was what I wanted to do, and what I was determined to achieve. I love it, the only other interest I might have pursued into a career was quickly dismissed by my science teacher. I suppose I wasn’t great with a Bunsen burner after all!
Q: What’s your favourite dress?
A: I don’t really wear dresses but my favourite was one I wore to the British Country Music Awards which was black and sparkly, with LOADS of sequins.
Q: What do you like to drink?
A: (Without hesitation) Tropicana orange juice.
Q: Making sure our 4-year-old was fully informed, I pressed for the decision of bits or no bits?
A: No bits. Nobody wants pulp around the edge of their glass!
Q: What are your favourite shoes to wear?
A: Casually - my converse. On stage - black chunky heeled boots. I wish I was cool enough to have thin tall heels but there is only one way that would end up!
Q: How old do I need to be to be your singer backing singer?
A: The perfect age for my backing singer is 4 and ¾! When can you start?!
Q: If I was your servant, what would you make me do?
A: I wouldn’t want you to be my servant… but we can sing, dance, have fun, and not do any chores!
Q: What other person do you want to look like?
A: I wouldn’t want to look like anyone else, and you should be yourself. Don’t try and be or please anyone else just be you!
Q: What colour eyes do you have? Do you like them?
A: My eyes are a bit unique, they are green with brown just around the pupil. There is a technical term but I won’t bore you with that. They are absolutely not hazel though and I love them!
Q: Why do you wear make-up?
A: To try new looks.
Q: How can I be a singer like you?
A: Just sing! Have confidence, have fun and just sing your heart out.
Q: What is your favourite song and why?
A: Living on a prayer by Bon Jovi. Anyone who knows me will know my love of Jon Bon Jovi and I got to meet him! I just about managed to keep my cool, whoever says don’t meet your idols is wrong. It makes me feel good, uplifted and generally if you look around a room that it is playing in you’ll see smiles on everyone’s face.
Beth speaks about her career with enthusiasm and joy which indicates she is going to have a long and successful career ahead of her. Whilst she claims to still get nervous before every performance, the excitement afterwards is what makes her want to do it all over again. Remember the name Beth Thornton as something tells me she’ll be sticking around for a while yet. The single ‘Your Everything’ is available now for download.
